How to count: Wait until your dog is resting quietly or asleep (not panting, not
just after exercise). One rise and fall of the chest is one breath. Count for 30 seconds and
double it. Most healthy dogs and cats breathe under 30 a minute at rest.
When it's an emergency: Call your vet or an emergency clinic now if your resting
dog stays above 30 to 40 breaths a minute, is breathing hard or with an open mouth, has blue or
grey gums, or can't settle.

days too. The trend over several days matters more than any single number. Ask your vet which
