How to measure: Fill the bowl with a measured amount and write it down. Only top
up with measured amounts, adding them to the same row. After 24 hours, pour what's left back into
the jug and subtract it. Total in minus left over is what your pet drank. To get ml per kg, divide
the day's total by your pet's weight in kg. Rule of thumb: about 40 to 60 ml/kg a day is usual on
dry food, and vets look more closely above about 100 ml/kg.
When to call sooner: Increased thirst on its own is usually a "measure a few days,
then book a visit" thing. Call your vet promptly if the thirst jumped suddenly and dramatically, or
comes with vomiting, not eating, weight loss, lethargy, new accidents indoors, or if a puppy or
kitten has become very thirsty.

Tip: measure three to seven days in a row. A single day says very little, and the run is what your
vet reads. Remember the water your pet drinks elsewhere (a second bowl, the garden, the other pet's
bowl) and note it rather than guessing. Keep the normal days too.
